Described as very angry by a team employee, George Steinbrenner reacted to a story in yesterday’s Post that reported the Yankees were exploring the possibility of playing a home-and-home series with the Cuban national team next year.
In a written statement, The Boss said his World Champions are focused on reaching the World Series for the third time in four years and not following AL East rival Baltimore into Cuba or hosting Fidel Castro’s ball club at Yankee Stadium.
“It is totally irresponsible to report that anyone from the New York Yankees has expressed any interest in playing the Cuban national team,” the release read. “I have no interest, the Yankees have no interest. We have one focus, getting back to the World Series. This is not on our agenda and it is not something to treat irresponsibly.”
The Post stands by its story.
