These are some of the improvements made in the city jail system under Correction Commissioner Bernard Kerik’s watch:
* In October 1995, prison officials reported 110 slashings and stabbings. last October, there were only 10. And last month, there were only six.
* The number of weapons recovered between March 1998 and March 1999 – 3,898 – was 20 percent fewer than during the previous year. Inmate searches during that period jumped 44 percent , to 21,558.
* Since 1995, inmate slashings and in the city jails dropped 90 percent, with only six incidents reported last month.
* Nearly 90 percent of prisoners now get to court on time, up from 70 percent three years ago.
