MCMULLEN DEFENDS ARENA PLAN

Stung by criticism of his intended partnership with the Rangers’ parent company to build his Hoboken arena, Devils owner John McMullen delivered a stern warning yesterday.

“We’ve been good citizens a long time. This year we lost a lot of money, and we’ve never made money. The only reason the team is still here is because I love it. When I’m not here, that won’t be so,” the 80-year-old told The Post.

McMullen was angered by suggestions that his deal with Cablevision to build his arena represents a possible conflict of interest between the Rangers and Devils that the NHL should avoid.

“We’re not going to marry Lou [Lamoriello] and Neil Smith,” McMullen said. “It is a joint venture for the arena. It has nothing to do with the operation of either team.”

McMullen said that his three-time Eastern Conference regular-season champs have a season ticket base of only 11,000 at the 19,040-seat Meadowlands Arena.

“After 17 years, and after all the hard work we’ve put in, that’s all we’ve got,” said McMullen, whose team managed only six regular- season sellouts and only Game 7 in four playoff dates. “That’s what we’re going to get there.

“There’s no way the team can survive under those conditions. We’ll have a much better draw [in Hoboken].”

McMullen maintained that he could have financed the arena himself, but that gaining the Garden’s pull for filling non-hockey dates with concerts and shows was a major enticement.

“Everyone asks how you can keep a one-team arena in this area. This answers that question very well,” McMullen said.

The Nets are trying to leave the Meadowlands to build an arena in Newark, while the New Jersy Sports and Exposition Authority wants to build a new arena in the Meadowlands for both teams.

McMullen and Cablevision have teamed up to split the cost of the $350 million arena, which requires permission and some $38 million from New Jersey to construct a platform over the rail yards at the train station. In exchange, the Devils extended their TV contract with Cablevision.

“There should be no fear of collusion with us,” McMullen said. “One thing we’ve proven is that we’re a totally independent team. We’re outcasts. You can’t find a more independent team than us.”
