Fred Wilpon stood in the Mets’ dugout during his team’s off-day workout yesterday and ranted that Bobby Valentine will be fired if the Mets don’t rebound from their NLCS deficit, Steve Phillips will be demoted to scout, pinned the nickname Mr. June on Mike Piazza and torched the umpiring crew.
Check that, wrong owner, wrong team, wrong decade.
In reality, Wilpon sounded a voice of encouragement and optimism.
Are these games just gravy, considering the Mets looked for a time as if they would not make it this far?
“No, not at all,” Wilpon said. “We want to get to the World Series and if we get to the World Series we want to win it.”
Wilpon was stunned to read in the Post recently that it had been 43 years since the last Subway World Series.
“I remember the Subway World Series as if it were yesterday,” he said. “I went to many Subway World Series. My father took me to my first one when I was about 4, at Ebbets Field. I was able to sit on his lap, so I had a very good seat.”
The prospect of another Subway World Series excites Wilpon.
“It would be the greatest,” Wilpon said. “That would be my first choice. The Mets against Boston would be my second choice.”
