The Transit Authority’s plan to install a cooling system at the Grand Central subway station has been put on ice, a new study indicates – forcing straphangers to brace for another hellish summer.
A consultant’s report says the TA scrapped the cooling project from the ongoing $68 million Grand Central revamp – scheduled to be finished by June 2000 – because of delays.
The fan-cooling system was removed “to avoid delay to the entire project,” which includes platform reconstructions, the report said.
TA spokesman Al O’Leary said that despite the report, a decision on a delay was still “up in the air.”
But Roy Cordero, 27, of East Harlem, was hot under the collar about the situation. “The heat in the summer is unbearable. I bring in my suits on a hanger. If I wore them to work, I’d be drenched,” said 27-year-old Roy Cordero of East Harlem.
