Mariana Makarova, 35, an exercise rider for John Kimmel, suffered a fractured thoracic spine as a result of an accident on the Belmont training track yesterday morning. She is being treated at North Shore University Hospital.
She currently has lost all function below the waist and is listed in stable condition.
“It’s still too early to determine the full extent of the injury,” said Dr. Stephen O’Brien of The Hospital For Special Surgery. “More tests are being done and we should know more in the next 24 to 48 hours.”
1ST RACE – Hip Hop Blue broke well and pressed pace set by Ladies Galore. On far turn, Hip Hop Blue made three-wide move and took over near top of stretch. Ladies Galore checked when Hip Hop Blue angled in slightly but eventual winner was clearly in front and drew off for victory. Favored Mary Nation was caught wide on turn and came up empty in stretech.
2ND RACE – Mike’s Way broke sharply but three steps out of gate Imadeed rushed up and took over. Imadeed set pace under hard hold by Edgar Prado and drew off to impressive victory while Prado sat motionless. She ran final quarter in :23 2/5 and could have run faster.
4TH RACE – Dots Pleasure set pace while being pressed on inside by J’s Magic Jet. Duo ran as team to top of stretch where J’s Magic Jet started to edge away despite tiring. Apprentice Janice Blake was able to keep her mount together and got him to wire first. Cappiano saved ground throughout and was right behind pacesetter in strtech, but hesitated slightly when he angled outside and leader bore out slightly to take away his path.
5TH RACE – Claracoly was was going to get caught five wide entering far turn when Norberto Arroyo Jr. angled her inside. She clipped heels with Wheatley Heights and stumbled badly. Arroyo lost his irons and had to pull up. Claracoly was not injured. Hector Rosario Jr., aboard Reen Racer, said he felt something go in her right front after wire and pulled her up. Reen’s Racer was vanned off.
7TH RACE – Rosario came back with nice ride on 28-1 Shore Leave. He saved ground while Sense of Boundary set pace. In stretch, Shore Leave caught Sense of Boundary near wire. Stalingrad angled outside soon after start and rushed up to press pace. Prado then eased him back before making another move on far turn. He ran well in stretch to finish third.
9TH RACE – Double Bow Wow stalked pace set by Ce Bon Ce Bon while Impeachthepro was under hard hold in third. On turn, N. Y. Gotcha was caught six wide and forced even wider when turning for home. Double Bow Wow then drew away while Lambourne closed well for second.
