The May 6 Kentucky Derby lost a major contender yesterday when trainer Frank Brothers said Mighty, two-length winner of the Louisiana Derby, will be sidelined for several weeks after injuring his leg.
The injury, a minor strain of the carpal tunnel behind his right front knee, likely occurred during the April 15 Blue Grass Stakes, in which Mighty finished seventh as the 2-1 second choice.
“He seemed fine coming out of the race,” Brothers said. “But sometimes you have to train them a few days to see what happens. He galloped a couple of days and had a little filling behind his knee.
“It could be something that could be a week or two, or less (to heal). If it’s a little more involved, it could be a month or two. We’re kind of in a gray area, but it looks to be very minor.”
