Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said last night the United States will take a leadership role when it comes to protecting its interests – with or without international support.
America’s role this century “is to lead, alone when we must, with others when we are able,” she said.
“There may be times in the future, as in the past, when the stakes and circumstances are such that America will act in advance of world opinion rather than merely reflect it,” she said.
Albright was featured speaker at “Global Forum 2000,” a discussion of America’s role in the 21st century involving more than 125 international, government, business and civic leaders.
The forum was hosted by Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corp., which owns The Post.
Among those attending the dinner at Windows on the World were former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, “60 Minutes” reporter Mike Wallace, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, baseball great Dave Winfield, Police Commissioner Howard Safir and Herman Badillo, chairman of the City University’s Board of Trustees.
Kissinger will moderate today’s forum at the Regent Wall Street Hotel, which will be shown live and commercial-free from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Fox News Channel.
