STYLE & SUBSTANCE: KRISTIN DAVIS

While Kristin Davis — the most demure of the “Sex and the City” sirens — may be on the hottest TV show, her acting career began quite humbly.

The 35-year-old brunette’s first gig was waving from a hot-air balloon as part of an ad campaign for New Jersey’s tourism department.

Not surprisingly, that spot didn’t exactly pave the way to superstardom. So the petite North Carolina native (and Rutgers graduate) moved to California and opened a yoga studio with a friend.

Soon things started going her way. Davis landed a breakthrough role as the devious Brooke Armstrong on TV’s “Melrose Place” and even dated “X-Files” star David Duchovny. She also guest-starred on “Seinfeld,” playing Jerry’s “toothbrush” girlfriend.

As part of an ensemble that includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Catrall and Cynthia Nixon, Davis is at the top of her game in “Sex,” which kicked off its third season on HBO last week.

Q: How do you account for the success of “Sex and the City?”

A: Most shows are lucky to have one strong woman. We have four, and I’m very proud of that.

Q: Other than any of your co-stars, which actress do you most admire?

A: Emma Thompson. What she gives on screen is incredibly brilliant and off-screen she is unapologetically herself.

Q: If you hadn’t made it as an actress, what would you be doing?

A: I worked in a flower shop during college and I loved it, so I would open up my own shop.

Q: What can’t you live without?

A: A telephone to call my friends in L.A. and my parents.

Q: What’s your workout routine?

A: A lot of walking and yoga.

Q: How do you take care of yourself?

A: I try to avoid excess — in eating, dieting and exercise.

Q: What are some of your favorite things?

A: Reinstein/Ross flower diamond earrings, rose quartz bracelets and lavender-tinted Paul Smith sunglasses.

Q: Favorite clothes?

A: Silk skirts and strappy T-shirts.

Q: Favorite food?

A: Le Petit Ecolier cookies.

Q: Do you follow a special diet?

A: I’m following the Zone diet. It helps me have enough energy for our long working days.

Q: Describe your personal style.

A: I like to be comfortable. I don’t want my clothes to wear me.

Q: What do you wear when relaxing?

A: Jeans and flip flops.

Q: What do you wear for a big night out?

A: Richard Tyler silk dresses.

Q: If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?

A: I worry a lot. It’s a waste of time that accomplishes nothing.

Q: Do you have any special health tips?

A: Relax and breath.

Q: What do you use to accessorize?

A: Very little jewelry, maybe an interesting bag.

Q: Whose style do you most admire?

A: My mother’s. She isn’t swayed by any trends and only wears lipstick.

Q: My closet is full of . . .

A: Black clothes.

Q: Some would say I have too many . . .

A: Jeans.

Q: Some would say I have too few . . .

A: Dresses.

Q: What was your most embarrassing fashion faux pas?

A: I used to wear tons of makeup. I think it was a holdover from my Southern childhood.

Q: What would you love to own but would never buy for yourself?

A: A Cartier watch.

Q: If you had more free time, what would you do with it?

A: Travel to Africa, Peru, Tibet . . .

Q: What don’t you ever leave home without?

A: Baby doll lip gloss by NARS.
