Mayor Giuliani honored some of the city’s unsung heroes who were on the job yesterday, from the sanitation workers who cleared the snow in Times Square to correction officers at city jails.
Wearing a Sanitation Department hat, Giuliani even gave out cookies to the broom-wielding cleanup crews in Times Square.
“Please enjoy them. I made them myself,” Giuliani jested, before heading to Rikers Island, where he doled out more cookies to correction officers working on the holiday.
“They’re doing a great job,” the mayor said of the correction officers. “Their record for reducing violence and making it a model institution is really tremendous, and I wanted to make sure that they knew everyone recognizes that.”
The mayor himself got some recognition – from inmates who banged on the bars of their cells as he went by and shouted, “Turn up the heat, mayor!”
Giuliani also paid a visit to one of New York’s Bravest at SUNY Downstate Hospital. Lt. Ernest Gentile, 45, a Ladder Co. 157 firefighter with 19 years of experience, suffered a heart attack on the job. He was listed in stable condition.
Later, Giuliani visited Engine Co. 90 and the 49th Precinct station house in The Bronx.
