Marcus Camby, embarrassed at the violence he perpetrated on Martin Luther King Day, said yesterday he is donating $20,000 to the MLK Foundation in Atlanta to make amends.
The foundation has been looking for funding to distribute a video on King’s distinguished, peacemaking life to schoolchildren in New York State.
Camby, who tried to suckerpunch Danny Ferry Monday but instead head-butted Jeff Van Gundy, runs the Cambyland Foundation and gives his time to the NBA’s Learning to Read program.
“I’m disappointed for all the kids,” Camby said. “I have like 20 kids who come to each game. To have them see that, especially on Martin Luther King Day, wasn’t called for. On my behalf, I decided to make a donation to the [MLK Foundation] in Atlanta. I’m truly sorry for the kids who came [Monday].”
Camby’s hoping his charity work is considered when the NBA whacks him with a suspension today.
“I do a lot of great things, I try to pride myself in being the best individual on and off the court,” Camby said. “Hopefully that can factor into it but I’m not banking on it.”
