The gingerbread man is dead – long live the gingerbread person!
In a bow to political correctness, the British supermarket chain Safeway announced it will manufacture gingerbread cookies of both sexes.
“The gingerbread men wear trousers while the gingerbread women have longer hair and wear a skirt,” a spokeswoman said.
The spokeswoman cited a consumer demand for equality of the gingerbread sexes.
But officials in the town of Grantham, where the spicy biscuit was born in 1740, mocked the move.
“This is utter nonsense, a waste of time and effort,” Mayor Mike Williams told yesterday’s London Daily Express.
“It’s political correctness gone way beyond the pale. The gingerbread man has always been an innocuous little fellow,” Williams said.
“It’s not as if he has all his naughty bits showing.”
