PARK CITY, Utah – “The Believer,” a drama about a Nazi skinhead who’s exposed as being Jewish, took the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival last night.
Ryan Gosling stars in the Grand Jury Prize winner directed by newcomer Henry Bean, which was inspired by a true case in New York City.
The dramatic directing award at Sundance, America’s premier independent film festival, went to John Cameron Mitchell for the rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” The 37-year-old first-time director also re-created his off-Broadway role as a German transsexual singer in the film, which won the audience award for Best Dramatic Feature.
A Special Jury award went to Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson, who play a married couple shattered by the death of their son in Todd Field’s “In the Bedroom.”
The twisty thriller “Memento” was cited for its screenplay, while the cinematography award went to the psychological drama “Deep End.”
