Gold Mover continued her winning ways as she destroyed the competition in winning the Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream Park yesterday.
The Mark Hennig-trainee, ridden by Jerry Bailey, won by 7½ lengths over Hazino, the longest shot in the race at 23-1. Thunder Bertie was another 1½ lengths behind in third.
Platinum Tiara, making her first start since finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, never showed any interest and finished last in the field of five, 32 lengths behind the winner.
1st RACE – Stage Tour chased the pace set by Radiance but started to fall back turning for home. Fast and Fortunate was moving alongside Stage Tour in the stretch when C. C. Lopez’ whip-struck Fast and Fortunate in the face. Fast and Fortunate dropped back while Stage Tour went on to finish third. There was a stewards’ inquiry and after a review, Stage Tour was placed fifth behind Fast and Fortunate.
2nd RACE – Secret Breeze broke awkwardly but then recovered quickly to rate off the pace. She started to move up on the far turn and Heberto Castillo Jr. went through traffic to get dead aim on All I Need for the stretch drive. Secret Breeze closed with a rush and got up in time for the victory. Expensive Fun was bet down to favoritism but raced wide throughout and came up empty in the stretch drive.
4th RACE – This is a race that I’m sure Javier Castellano would love to forget. Castellano was aboard Fast Modem and stalked the pace set by Mancini. On the far turn, Fast Modem started to move up and took the lead turning for home. Holiest Punch was making a run towards the leader in the stretch. Fast Modem still had a slight lead while Holiest Punch was gaining ground with each stride. But then Castellano stood up at the sixteenth pole while Holiest Punch went by to gain the lead and the victory. After a few strides, Castellano did the sign of the cross and sat back down, easily holding on to the place spot. He did misjudge the finish line and will be in to talk to the stewards about it on Wednesday.
5th RACE – It was bombs away as Games of Chance, making his first start since breaking his maiden for $12,500 at Suffolk Downs, closed well in the stretch and caught Final Dispersal at the wire for the victory. Pradeau broke down entering the far turn and was vanned off.
6th RACE – Mascareye took advantage of a speed duel between Smooth Talc and What’s New and closed well on the outside to gain the victory. Smooth Talc looked like a beaten horse but somehow came back in the final steps to narrowly gain the place spot over What’s New. The Conqueror, bet down to favoritism at 8-5, chased the pace but was done on the far turn and beat only one horse.
7th RACE – Scott Lake flew down to Tampa to watch the Super Bowl with his owner Richard Englander, but he would have loved to have seen his runner Ordained catch the pacesetting Selma Ala for the victory. Mike Luzzi kept Ordained closer to the pace than usual and then ran down the pacesetter in the stretch for the victory. Bold Pic saved ground throughout but had nowhere to go at the top of the stretch and couldn’t make up any ground when he angled outside.
