TAMPA – His yards came much the same way the Ravens beat their opponents – methodically and in a calculated way.
Raven rookie RB back Jamal Lewis, who gained more than 1,300 rushing yards in the regular season, finally wore out the Giants’ defense in last night’s 34-7 Baltimore win.
He rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 27 grinding carries.
“I felt stronger as the game went on,” Lewis said. “As the game went on, I felt like I could gain more and more yards. I just wanted to be patient early and wait for an opportunity.”
Lewis had 51 yards on 13 carries in the first half and 51 yards on 14 carries in the second half. His touchdown, a three-yard run, gave Baltimore a 31-7 lead.
Ravens’ coach Brian Billick was ecstatic for Lewis, who’d been criticized for slowing down as the season wore on.
“I’ll tell you what, for a young kid like that just to keep pounding away was great,” Billick said. “It bodes well for him in the future.”
