A fire in a circuit-breaker left more than 2,800 apartments in a 15-block area of Chelsea without power for more than six hours yesterday.
Linda Goldblum and her husband were among the several dozen residents who mingled outside their housing complex waiting for electrical power to be restored.
“It’s hot inside – that’s why we’re out here,” she said. “There’s no air conditioning.”
Fire Chief Kevin Byrnes said a “bus bar” – a conducting bar in the breaker – on a power generator gave off a flame that set a cardboard box on fire at 9:30 a.m.
