LOCAL GOLF
Golfers heading up to the Spa this summer to see the ponies might want to put a few dollars down on Saratoga National.
Just about a mile down the road from the famed racetrack, Saratoga National Golf Club opened last month to rave reviews. The course was craftly designed by New Jersey native Roger Rulewich, whose other designs include Ballyowen and Wild Turkey up in the Great Gorge area.
A former horse farm adjacent to Lake Lonely, the course plays 6,249 yards from the white tees. Accuracy is necessary, particularly on the par 3s, so it might be wise to pack a few extra balls. Green fees are $85, including cart and range balls. For tee times, call 518-583-4653.
IKE TOURNAMENT
George Zahringer carded a final-round 5-under 67 to win the Ike MGA/MetLife Stroke Play Championship for the third time last week at Fairvew Country Club in Greenwich.
The 48-year-old Deepdale amateur entered the final round of the 54-hole tourney six shots behind 36-hole leader Andrew Svoboda of Winged Foot. Svoboda, a senior to be at St. John’s, finished two shots back at 215. Three-time Ike champ Jerry Courville Jr. was six back.
Ken Cohen of Villa Roma had the shot of the tournament with a hole-in-one at the 216-yard 14th.

Joan Placek of Crab Meadow Ladies Club shot a 4-over 76 to win the fourth annual Women’s Public Links Championship at New York CC in New Hempstead.

Garrett Engel of Seawane shot 2-under 70 to take medalist honors at the MGA’s Junior Championship sectional qualifier last week at Timber Point. Sean Dzugal shot 3-over 75 in the sectional at H. Smith Richardson in Fairfield. The final is slated for July 16-19.
