The New York Liberty yesterday made a slam dunk for charity – contributing $10,000 to the families of the three firefighters killed in the Astoria fire on Father’s Day.
“Those families have gone through a lot, more than people should ever have to,” said Liberty forward Tamika Whitmore.
“I’m glad that we could help a little.”
The team’s donation brought the fund’s total to $488,000.
“We think they’re the team in New York with the biggest heart,” said union recording secretary Bill Mirro, who accepted the check in an on-court ceremony at Madison Square Garden before the Liberty beat the Orlando Miracle, 72-60.
“I’ve spoken to all three widows, and they can’t believe the outpouring of generosity and caring,” added Tom DaParma, the Queens trustee for the union.
DaParma and Mirro also asked New Yorkers to pray for firefighter Joseph Vosilla, who is still fighting for his life in Elmhurst Hospital.
Sources said Vosilla, who was taken off a respirator earlier this week, has taken a turn for the worse and was scheduled to undergo surgery yesterday.
