GORE’S BACK TO RAISE BUCKS

Al Gore may be planning a comeback.

The ex-veep is expected to go on the stump for Democratic candidates, and has hired two top-gun fund-raisers to help in his political re-emergence, The Hill newspaper reported yesterday.

Gore has told party leaders he hasn’t made his final decision about whether to take a shot at the White House in 2004.

“I’ve spoken to the vice president. He told me he wants to wait until after the summer [and then] extensively campaign for candidates,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe told the weekly Washington paper. “He is keeping his options open.”

The focus this year is on gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, contests the parties say will provide momentum going into next year’s midterm elections.

Gore “will be campaigning for the party and for Democratic candidates,” said DNC spokeswoman Maria Cardone.
