Dave Winfield has parlayed a Hall of Fame career into a “Call of Fame” business opportunity. He’s hoping to have as much success with the latter as he did with the former.
A month before being officially inducted into Cooperstown, Winfield was pitching a unique calling-card business in which fans can talk live to former ballplayers for $4.95 per minute.
The former Padres and Yankees outfielder explained yesterday his involvement with the company as well as his decision to wear the Padres hat on his Hall of Fame plaque in Cooperstown.
“I didn’t know until this year started that you had to choose the hat to be represented,” said Winfield, who will be inducted on Aug. 5.
The Yankees had hoped he would choose to wear the NY on his plaque instead of the SD.
“I think I’m on very good terms and relationships with both organizations,” Winfield said. “(Owners) John Moores and Larry Lucchino of the Padres are wonderful people.”
Ironically, Winfield indicated he’ll probably be on the Yankee roster of available former players in this upstart venture.
Teams from each city, including former players from the Yankees and Mets will be available within a week to 10 days. Visit the website calloffame.com or call 1-800-670-2291 for more information.
