A Muslim firefighter in Maryland has won the right to wear her religion’s required head scarf while on duty – a probable first in the nation.
Stacy Tobing, 29, began wearing the hijab scarf the Koran requires after she returned from a trip to Mecca – the Muslim holy city – but fire officials worried it might compromise safety.
Under a compromise negotiated with the help of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Tobing can wear the hijab while on duty – but will switch to a fire-retardant hood when battling a blaze.
