Maria Fu was devastated when she realized she accidentally dropped an unsealed, unmarked envelope stuffed with nearly $600 into a postal box.
“Oh, my God,” the Kew Gardens hairdresser lamented over her mistake Tuesday evening. “I have a kid. I need the money.”
Her prayers were answered Wednesday morning.
Less than an hour after reporting the missing cash to the Postal Service, it was recovered, thanks to the honesty of two veteran postal workers.
Fu’s trauma began at 82nd Street and Kew Gardens Road, where she dropped a stack of letters into a mailbox. She thought the blank envelope filled with her hard-earned hairdressing money was still in her purse.
It wasn’t until 10:30 p.m. she realized it was sitting in the drop box.
After a restless night, she called the post office.
Kew Gardens window clerk Anna Palacios quickly called out to mail carrier Gerard Bory, who handles Fu’s route, and asked him to bring in all the letters from the postal box in question.
They laid all the mail on the table, and quickly found the $600 envelope.
