SHINJO SET TO RETURN

MET NOTES

Tsuyoshi Shinjo, who has been out since June 18, expects to come off the DL tomorrow or Sunday.

Shinjo said after last night’s 4-2 win over the Red Sox at Shea that his left quad feels better and his swing feels right.

“I think I’m ready to play here,” Shinjo said through his interpreter, Ken Iwamoto.

While manager Bobby Valentine seemed to support this idea, GM Steve Phillips was non-committal and wouldn’t rule out Shinjo going on a minor-league rehab before returning to Shea.

Rick Reed (sore neck) is going to start Sunday with Glendon Rusch going tomorrow. Reed missed his final start of the first half Sunday and didn’t participate in the All-Star game.

Robin Ventura (right shoulder) missed the final two games before the All-Star break. Valentine said that while Ventura isn’t 100 percent, he was able to play. He batted fourth last night. Ventura took a grounder off the shin in the ninth, but said he was fine afterward.

Joe McEwing stole two bases . . . Rey Ordonez went 2-for-3 and is 6-for-17 (.353) in his past four games . . . Armando Benitez has converted all 19 of his save chances this year, including last night. His ERA in those games is 0.93.

In the Mets’ last 11 games, the starting pitchers’ ERA is 2.55. The team’s record is 5-6 . . . Todd Zeile was 0-for-4 last night. In all four at-bats, he left at least one runner in scoring position.

Benny Agbayani and Rick White both rejoined the team yesterday. Agbayani departed last Saturday morning for Hawaii to be with his wife, Niela, as she had the couple’s first child.

White also left Saturday to be with his ailing grandmother. She passed away. Both Agbayani and White missed the final two games of the first half.

Jersey Bobby Jones had another setback on a rehab, injuring his shoulder again. Jones hasn’t played with the Mets all season.

The Mets signed their first-round sandwich pick, the 38th overall. Third baseman David Wright, 18, signed for $960,000. The 6-foot, 195-pound Wright was the Virginia High School Player of the Year. He’ll report to Kingsport on Saturday.
