COPS GRILL ‘WATCH’ GAL – EX-STAFFER GAVE CONDIT GIFT BOX HE TOSSED

WASHINGTON – Police have questioned the mystery woman who gave Rep. Gary Condit the watch box he allegedly threw away just hours before his home was searched by cops, The Post has learned.

Sources close to the investigation into missing intern Chandra Levy identified the woman as Joliene Argentini McKay, a former Condit employee.

Information on McKay’s contacts with investigators emerged as Condit agreed to meet with FBI agents who have joined the hunt for Levy.

McKay, 29, lives in San Francisco and worked in an administrative job in Condit’s Washington office in 1994, the sources said.Police first interviewed her last May, when they spoke to several women linked to Condit.

McKay at the time reportedly told cops she’d had an affair with the California congressman, who represents her hometown of Modesto, Calif.

Police interviewed her a second time about two weeks ago – after Condit was spotted suspiciously dumping the Tag Heuer watch box into a Virginia garbage can.

McKay said she gave him the watch and case. She could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Condit allegedly drove to Alexandria, Va., from Washington on July 10 to toss out the box – and police want to know if he was trying to hamper their investigation. An unknown man may have accompanied Condit.

Washington police said they would like to hold a fourth interview with Condit to ask him about several issues, including the watch-box episode.

“We want to follow up to find out what there is to it,” said Executive Assistant Police Chief Terrence Gainer.

Meanwhile, Condit agreed yesterday to sit down with FBI profilers who are putting together a portrait of Chandra to help determine what might have happened. Police will not be present.

The meeting was arranged by Condit lawyer Abbe Lowell, who sources said was also discussing the possibility that Condit will take an FBI-administered lie-detector test.

In another development, police plan to start talking to the 25 registered sex offenders who live near Levy’s and Condit’s apartments, The Washington Times reported.

And Levy’s family released a videotape of the missing intern Monday, in which her voice is heard publicly for the first time.
