COPS GRILL ‘WATCH’ GAL – QUESTION EX-MISTRESS ABOUT GIFT TO CONDIT

WASHINGTON – Police have questioned the mystery woman who gave Rep. Gary Condit the watch box he allegedly threw away just hours before his home was searched by cops, The Post has learned.

The 29-year-old woman lives in San Francisco and worked in an administrative position in Condit’s Washington office in 1994, the sources said.

Police first interviewed her in May, when they spoke to several women tied to Condit.

At the time, she reportedly told cops she’d had an affair with the California congressman, who represents her hometown of Modesto.

Police interviewed her a second time about two weeks ago, after Condit was allegedly spotted suspiciously dumping the Tag Heuer watch box into a Virginia garbage can.

The woman said she gave him the watch and case as a gift. She could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Condit allegedly drove to Alexandria, Va., from Washington on July 10 to toss out the box – and police want to know if he was trying to hamper their investigation by disposing of evidence. A unknown man may have accompanied Condit.

Police hope to question Condit about the watch box episode in a fourth interview with the congressman, which is expected to take place later this week.

“We want to follow up to find out what there is to it,” said D.C. Executive Assistant Police Chief Terrence Gainer.

Condit’s lawyer Abbe Lowell met with FBI agents yesterday to discuss the interview and the possibility that Condit will agree to take an FBI-administered lie-detector test.

D.C. police will head up the interview, but an FBI criminal profiler will be present for the first time while Condit is questioned.

Meanwhile, as they expand their search for the intern, police plan to start talking to the 25 registered sex offenders who live near Levy’s and Condit’s Washington apartments, the Washington Times reported yesterday.

Investigators also continued to hunt for clues in wooded areas and D.C. parks.

Levy’s family released a new videotape of the missing intern Monday night, in which her voice is heard publicly for the first time.

Levy is heard on the tape – recorded two years ago – chatting with her mom about how happy she is at graduate school.
