All the attention was on Danny Kanell last night when the Newark Bears played the Somerset Patriots at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J., but there was another new player on the Bears’ roster that was hoping to make this baseball journey a bridge to the majors – former Phillies and Rangers slugger Pete Incaviglia.
Incaviglia, 37, suffered a serious abdominal injury last season and had been out of action for more than a year. He owns 206 major league home runs.
“I was coming off shoulder surgery last year, too, but now everything’s good,” said Incaviglia, who picked up two hits as the DH in the 4-1 loss. “I’m just glad to be back. I miss the competition and this is a good league.”
Incaviglia has been keeping a close watch on the Phillies and praised Larry Bowa for the job he’s done.
“I love him to death, man,” he said. “There’s not a better baseball man anywhere. He loves the game and wants guys to play hard every day.”
