Move over, Bob Dole. Mayor Giuliani is becoming something of a Viagra pitchman.
The mayor, who has been battling prostate cancer, blasted a city insurance company for calling the love drug “recreational” and refusing to cover its cost for a retired NYPD sergeant.
“They’re jerks!” Giuliani told the sergeant, who phoned the mayor’s weekly call-in radio show last night to complain.
“You don’t know how apropos this conversation is.”
Giuliani didn’t tell listeners if he used the little wonder pills himself.
His aides disclosed earlier this year that Giuliani had been rendered impotent by his treatment for prostate cancer, which is believed to have included radioactive seed implants, follow-up doses of radiation, and medication.
On the air, Hizzoner hailed the benefits of Viagra – which counts Playboy founder Hugh Hefner among its users and advocates.
“It makes sense to me when you think about the fact that it brings circulation of blood to the area that needs to be healed,” Giuliani said.
“So from that point of view, it makes sense to me that it would have a therapeutic effect – certainly psychologically, it could.”
Giuliani promised the sergeant he would help him get insurance coverage.
