Broadway theaters are beefing up security following the seizure of a packed Moscow theater by Chechen rebels.
Philip Smith, president of the Shubert Organization, which owns 16 theaters on the Great White Way, said security “has been stepped up in recent days,” but he declined to provide specifics.
He added that the company already has its own security force and “we do liaison with the Police Department.”
Gerald Schoenfeld, the organization’s chairman said, “We have a large security force in place and we are coordinating with law enforcement authorities to ensure the security of our patrons.”
The Shubert Organization added extra guards after the Sept. 11 attacks.
The Nederlander Organization, which owns nine theaters, also increased security, sources said.
Officials of the Jujamcyn Theaters, which owns five Broadway houses, did not return calls seeking comment.
Some London theaters have also increased security.
