Afraid of the park?

Those with a fondness for the surreal will enjoy the sight of pumpkins floating on the surface of Harlem Meer in Central Park tomorrow. This is the traditional finale of the Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Sail, a fun, free day for the kids. Maybe the alligator that haunted the Meer last summer will show up and bob for gourds, now that would be scary. 3:30 p.m., inside the Park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox avenues.

Gowanus upon us

The industrial landscape of Gowanus has become yet another starving artist Mecca, similar to DUMBO and Williamsburg. This weekend, the Gowanus Artists Open Studio Tour allows you to invade the spaces of some local creative types, or you can just hit up the Gowanus Art Building (295 Douglas St., between Third and Fourth avenues) for free beer and food. 1 to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, all around Gowanus, Brooklyn, (718) 638-7451.

A moment’s paws

Continuing the relentless run of recent dog-related events, Dogfest 2002, a Halloween bash for canines, rolls into Fort Tryon Park today. Obsessive dog owners mix and mingle while treating their pooches to a day of photo sessions and costume contests. This is what happens when people don’t breed. Noon to 5 p.m., Fort Washington Avenue and 190th Street, (877) 512-9899.
