The no-turn experiment on 10 Midtown streets will continue at least through the holiday season, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.
The mayor conceded there are some “kinks” that need to be worked out by the Department of Transportation on the through streets in the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Motorists have been griping that crosstown traffic has actually slowed on those blocks since the experiment began Oct. 15, and a recent Post report found the through streets move slower than those where turns are allowed.
“Give it some time,” advised the mayor. “It’s too early to tell.”
He recalled there was also a lot of grumbling when E-ZPass was first introduced.
“Now everybody – or a lot of people – love it . . . We’re going to do this for a number of months, particularly during the Christmas season when the traffic gets to be impossible,” Bloomberg said.
“If it works, fantastic. And if it doesn’t work, it isn’t a question of eating humble pie. If it doesn’t work, you try something else.”
