The city took aim at the Sports Authority yesterday for illegally selling imitation guns.
The sporting goods giant pulled three brands of paintball guns from the shelves of its two Queens stores after receiving a citation from the Department of Consumer Affairs.
The store faces up to $200,000 in fines.
“This is all brand new to us,” said Frank Bubb, general counsel for the Florida-based chain. “We didn’t know that this was an issue.”
City law prohibits sale of imitation guns unless they are painted a bright color – not black, dark blue or gray.
“The problem is the color,” DCA Commissioner Gretchen Dykstra said yesterday outside a Sports Authority store on 19th Street and Sixth Avenue. “These guns look real.”
The store doesn’t sell the guns at its three Manhattan locations, Bubb said.
