Fed up with a history of failing schools, a coalition of parents groups in the South Bronx are proposing an “Education Bill of Rights” to turn them around.
“We understand what needs to be done. Now we want to hold the Department of Education accountable to make sure things get done,” said Denise Moncrief, a parent in District 9.
Moncrief said she became more involved after discovering that her son’s former school – PS 90 – didn’t provide textbooks for social-studies and science courses.
A majority of the schools are flunking state and federal standards, and four s are so bad that they were taken over by the chancellor’s office.
The new Community Collaborative to Improve District 9 Schools will unveil its agenda at a rally today.
