A fired U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service inspector was convicted yesterday of swindling nearly $1 million from Chinese families by promising them he could provide green cards for their relatives.
Tin Yat Chin, 45, lured his victims by pretending to be an INS employee who could solve their immigration problems. He demanded more than $30,000 to provide papers for each prospective immigrant but disappeared once he had the money.
He faces up to 10 years in prison.
Chin lost his job as an INS inspector in 1994 for demanding money and jewelry from Chinese nationals who came through Kennedy Airport seeking asylum.
