ALBANY – Sen. Charles Schumer yesterday called on the state to fire all Muslim clerics hired by a former prison imam who defended the Sept. 11 terrorists.
“These imams represent a clear and present danger to safety and security of New York State’s prison system and indeed our entire country,” Schumer wrote in a letter to state Corrections Commissioner Glen Goord.
Schumer acted after The Post reported yesterday that Goord banned Warith Deen Umar, a retired administrative chaplain for the prison system, from ever again working or volunteering in a state prison.
In a front-page Wall Street Journal article on Wednesday, Umar was quoted as not only praising the 9/11 terrorists, but also predicting further attacks.
For years, part of Umar’s $67,919-a-year job with the state was to recruit, train and deploy Muslim clerics to help convert thousands of inmates to Islam.
Umar, 58, told The Post Wednesday the Journal story was inaccurate.
