Fordham athletic director Frank McLaughlin issued a statement yesterday in response to a Post story that reported the school is doing preliminary work to see if it’s possible to severe ties with coach Bob Hill.
“Fordham University is committed to all facets of our mission, including a successful basketball program in the highly competitive Atlantic 10,” McLaughlin said in the statement. “Bob Hill is our coach, and is going to be our coach.”
The Rams are 2-21 this season and Hill is 36-73 in three-plus seasons. He signed a 10-year deal with Fordham, which would owe Hill $1 million should he be fired. In yesterday’s Post, Hill acknowledged that it might be best for all involved that he and Fordham part ways.
McLaughlin said he spoke to Hill yesterday and offered to speak to the men’s basketball team prior to today’s practice. A source close to the situation said Hill’s job status was not discussed at a board of trustees meeting Feb. 13.
But the source maintained that Fordham has been slowly but surely taking steps to learn what options it has. The source said that it could take some time before the situation sorts itself out, but in the end, Fordham and Hill, will not be together.
“This has been going on for a little while now,” said the source. “There are people in the basketball community and New York business community who have and will talk about a change.”
