Democratic presidential candidate Al Sharpton’s role as an African-American power-broker came under light-hearted attack last night from a black civil-rights organization.
In a spirited-but-friendly debate with Congress of Racial Equality spokesman Niger Innis, Sharpton said that he would expand the Democratic Party, much as Jesse Jackson did when he ran in the 1980s.
Appearing before the Deadline Club, the conservative Innis said he couldn’t wait to watch black liberals split their votes between Sharpton and former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun.
Sharpton retorted. “You mention Carol Moseley-Braun and how she will hurt my black vote. I’m worried about whether Joe Lieberman is going to hurt my Jewish vote.”
