COUNCIL RACE TOO CLOSE TO CALL

A City Council candidate who angered Mayor Bloomberg was deadlocked with the candidate Hizzoner endorsed in a special election last night.

Vincent Gentile earned the mayor’s ire by using a picture of his $8 million dollar townhouse in an anti-property-tax hike mailing.

With 99 percent of the precincts counted in the five-candidate race in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Gentile led Rosemary O’Keefe, 3,113 votes to 3,049. Each had about 30 percent of the vote.

Mayoral aides said Gentile’s use of the photo created a security risk – and Bloomberg endorsed O’Keefe, who also opposes the property tax.

In other races, former State Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. won more than 60 percent of the vote to easily defeat Kenneth Padilla for a council seat in The Bronx’s 18th District.

Democrats held on to two Assembly seats last night, with Michael Benjamin winning in The Bronx and William Boyland victorious in Brooklyn.
