Bill Clinton is still tangled up in legal hitches with longtime nemesis Paula Jones.
In the latest twist to the 13-year saga, nutty businessman and Senate wannabe Abe Hirschfeld, who is being sued by Jones, is seeking to depose the former president. Jones is suing Hirschfeld in Manhattan federal court for allegedly reneging on a promise in 1998 to pay her $1 million if she settled her sexual-harassment case against Clinton. The former Arkansas state worker settled for $850,000, but the eccentric 83-year-old never paid up, court papers say.
Clinton’s lawyer, David Kendall, has moved to quash Hirschfeld’s subpoena for deposition, arguing the ex-president has “no special knowledge” of the dispute between Jones and Hirschfeld. “The only result of the deposition would be to burden the former president and generate publicity about the case,” Kendall said in a letter to the court.
Magistrate judge Gabriel Gorsenstein is expected to rule on the issue soon. Jones’ lawyer, Thomas Cohen, who would also be entitled to question Clinton if Hirschfeld gets the green light, said, “I’ve always wanted to meet a president of the United States, but not in this fashion.”
Hirschfeld, who recently did time on Rikers Island for a foiled plot to execute a business partner, took out newspaper ads last month announcing his latest scheme – a run for the U.S. Senate.
