Mayor Bloomberg yesterday implored Albany to pass a new vendor-control law, saying the recent flood of sidewalk salesmen has made walking a dangerous exercise.
The old law, which forced vendors away from crowded areas and on to side streets, expired in March when the state Assembly and Senate couldn’t compromise on new legislation.
Since then, the salesmen have descended on overcrowded sections of the city such as Times Square and the 59th Street entrance to Central Park.
“What you have going on today is just unsafe,” Bloomberg said. “People are having to walk into the streets because there are so many vendors on the busy sidewalks.”
Sources said Bloomberg is in discussion with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to get a new version of the law in place.
