A top aide to City Council member Eva Moskowitz has sent out an e-mail that says the legislator wants to hire workers for $400 a week “under the table,” The Post has learned.
The e-mail was sent by Moskowitz’s press secretary, Abby Wilson, 24, on Monday to several friends.
The missive said Moskowitz, who chairs the Education Committee, was looking to hire “several detail-oriented individuals” to help plan a reception in January for science educators at the Museum of Natural History.
“The guest list will be star-studded and several hundred people long,” the e-mail said. “Pay will be $400/week under the table or pro-rata, depending on your schedule.”
Moskowitz quickly disavowed her aide’s seeming attempt to avoid the taxman.
“I was mystified and troubled to learn of the e-mail that you sent out suggesting that people on the science project would be paid ‘under the table,’ ” Moskowitz told Wilson in a written reprimand.
“I cannot imagine what you meant, and – if you meant what the language you chose appears to suggest – I cannot imagine where you got the idea.”
Moskowitz told The Post she was “infuriated.”
Wilson declined to comment but sent another e-mail yesterday saying “this was a case of extremely bad and inaccurate word choice.”
“What I meant was that the person hired will not be on the city’s payroll, as the event is being financed with donated funds,” Wilson wrote.
She will not be disciplined, Moskowitz said.
