Pleased to meet you, won’t you guess my name?
It’s Sir Mick to you.
Toffee-nosed, 60-year-old Rolling Stone Michael Philip Jagger – once the scourge of the British establishment – strutted into Buckingham Palace yesterday wearing a suit, a long scarf – and sneakers.
Jagger was knighted by Prince Charles, whose mother, Queen Elizabeth, was in the hospital for knee surgery. Wearing a suit, a leather overcoat, his trademark 6-foot scarf, and a pair of black leather Adidas sneakers, a beaming Jagger denied he had betrayed his unconventional past.
“I don’t think the establishment as we knew it exists anymore,” he said. Honors are very nice “as long as you don’t take them all too seriously,” he added.
A rebel to the end, Jagger shunned the traditional top hat and tails and received Brit society’s ultimate accolade in leather footwear favored by Missy Elliott and Ashton Kutcher. He was tapped lightly on each shoulder with a sword by Prince Charles, then set off to spend the knight together with his family.
With him was (from left) his 92-year-old dad Joe (who once scoffed at Mick’s passion for “jungle music”) and daughters Karis, 32, and Elizabeth, 19.
Fellow Rolling Stone Keith Richards had said earlier this week that Jagger was betraying the band’s principles by accepting the honor. He called the knighthood a “f- – -ing disgrace.” But Jagger pooh-poohed his bandmate’s diss.
“It is a bit like a bawling child who hasn’t got an ice cream – one gets one, and they all want one,” he said. “It’s nothing new. Keith likes to make a fuss.”
