QUARTERBACKSThough he didn’t have a lot of help, Chad Pennington (24-43, 229 yards, 5 INTs, 31.2 rating) was at his worst, though he did engineer three scoring drives, scoring two rushing TDs.
RUNNING BACKSCurtis Martin (22-for-89 rushing, 4-21 receiving) ran well enough to move the sticks but was ineffective on blitz blocking. FB Jerald Sowell had two catches for 24 yards, but had two drops.
WIDE RECEIVERSSantana Moss (5-52) didn’t have a good game. He had a chance to prevent two of Pennington’s INTs. Kevin Lockett had two big catches for 34 yards.
TIGHT ENDSChris Baker was effective catching three passes for 31 yards, though he was unable to reel in a TD catch. Anthony Becht had four catches for 29 yards.
OFFENSIVE LINEFour sacks allowed and a Kareem McKenzie holding penalty. Not a great day picking up the Patriots’ blitzing. C Kevin Mawae played Pats NT Ted Washington to about a draw.
DEFENSIVE LINEDT Dewayne Robertson (four tackles, two pressures) played well, as did NT Jason Ferguson (six tackles and a pressure). DT Josh Evans had five tackles.
LINEBACKERSSam Cowart had six tackles, Victor Hobson had three, Marvin Jones and Mo Lewis two each. They had some problems stopping the run, with Antowain Smith rushing for 121 yards on 18 carries.
SECONDARYFS Tyrone Carter had an INT and three tackles, but he was late to help on the Patriots’ last TD. CB Aaron Beasley allowed David Givens to run freely past him and catch a TD pass.
SPECIAL TEAMSMoss made two poor decisions not to field punts inside the 20 and leaving the Jets with worse field position, and he returned one for only eight yards. Coverage teams allowed Bethel Johnson to average 29.5 yards on two returns.
KICKING GAMEK Doug Brien was good his only FG try, a 29-yarder. P Dan Stryzinski averaged 37 yards on four punts.
COACHINGHerman Edwards and his staff have to do a better job of clock management. The Jets left one timeout on the table in the first half and then burned one with 50 seconds remaining in the game and the clock already stopped. Not a great game for offensive coordinator Paul Hackett, who was predictable with too many calls.
