WASHINGTON – As President Bush’s bus tour hits Iowa and Wisconsin today, Republicans are raising new questions about whether Democrat John Kerry tells the truth about the cars that he drives.
Republican National Chairman Ed Gillespie last night showed video of Kerry claiming in January that he’d sold his “gas-guzzler” – although a month later, he told a car-loving Detroit crowd that he still owned “some” gas-guzzling SUVs.
“If John Kerry can’t give a straight answer to the simple question, ‘What kind of car do you own?’ I guess we shouldn’t expect him to be able to tell us what would be his policy for Iraq,” Gillespie said.
The car video dates to Jan. 7, when Kerry was asked in New Hampshire what he’d done to reduce his own dependence on oil. He replied, “Well, I sold my gas-guzzler and got a van and downgraded. That’s what I did personally in my own life.”
But a month later, in Michigan, Kerry said, “We have some SUVs” while listing family cars – only to switch on Earth Day and blame his wife for the SUV, claiming “the family has it, I don’t have it.”
