CNBC has cancelled “The News on CNBC,” anchored by John Seigenthaler.
Seigenthaler will continue to anchor the weekend editions of the “NBC Nightly News” and will become a “special correspondent” for the weekday “Nightly News” anchored by Tom Brokaw.
Replacing “The News on CNBC” at 8 p.m. are repeats of “Meet the Press” and the magazine show “Cover to Cover.”
“Our decision to move in a different strategic direction with our programming has necessitated this change,” CNBC president/CEO Pamela Thomas-Graham said in a statement.
The 16 staffers from “The News” will have the opportunity to get other jobs within NBC News.
“I am pleased that the talented group of professionals at ‘The News’ will still be able to contribute to other programs in the NBC News family,” said NBC News president Neal Shapiro.
“In addition to his talents as an anchor, John Seigenthaler is a top-notch reporter and we look forward to an increased presence from him on ‘NBC Nightly News.'”
“The News” was averaging 142,000 viewers at 8 p.m., leading into “Dennis Miller” at 9 – which, beginning in July, will lead into John McEnroe’s new talk show.
