Class sizes dropped in eight out of 10 grades in the current school year, the Department of Education said yesterday.
Fourth-grade classes had an average of 24.5 students, one fewer than last year. Fifth-grade classes averaged 26.3 students, down from 26.9 last year.
Class sizes also were down slightly in kindergarten through third grade, as well as sixth.
“It’s a terrific trend. We’re delighted,” said Deputy Chancellor Kathleen Grimm.
Class sizes jumped slightly only in grades seven and eight, the figures show.
