ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION – STEINER NO GREAT LOSS TO YANK RADIO BOOTH

Many in the Yankee broadcasting community are pleased to see Charley Steiner leave for the Dodgers’ booth – starting with his now ex-partner, John Sterling.

Sterling and Steiner formed a tedious radio tandem, as they both sound similar and never developed a strong on-air bond.

Over the three years the team was together, Sterling repeatedly told colleagues how much he disliked working with Steiner, pointing to Steiner’s inaccurate calls and cliche-ridden analyses. While probably uncalled for, the critiques were not incorrect.

During Steiner’s introduction with the Dodgers on Monday, he didn’t exactly sound like he would miss working in The Bronx.

“In New York, the overwhelming emotion after a victory is one of relief and not of joy,” Steiner said, according to MLB.com.

“I want to feel joy again, that it’s OK to laugh. There’s no better theater in baseball than Yankee Stadium for the drama, for the history. But it’s a hard place to work.”

The move to L.A. was a good one for Steiner because he was expected to be pushed out of the Yankee radio booth by Suzyn Waldman. Steiner and Sterling didn’t return calls for comment.

Jody McDonald, dropped from WFAN’s mid-day team in favor of Joe Benigno, could end up doing some part-time work for Sirius satellite radio’s NFL Network.

Steve Cohen, formerly of FAN, heads up Sirius’ NFL programming department. The two had a good relationship at the FAN.

John Madden on Tom Brady: “I don’t want to compare him and say he is Joe Montana, but he is a lot like Joe Montana. We were talking today about who is the best quarterback. Who is this? And who is that? He just does things effortlessly. And I said maybe Peyton Manning is a Dan Marino and Tom Brady is a Joe Montana.” Got that? No comparisons.

Sportscasters, start sending your resume now. Ed Goren, Fox Sports president, said Joe Buck will not be the lead play-by-player when his network takes over the BCS Series in 2007.

Buck is Fox Sports’ voice for the World Series and the Super Bowl, but Goren wants a fresh look and sound for Fox Sports’ college football coverage.
