Jimmy Johnson vs. Mike Ditka
(Who is a better analyst?)
On Fox NFL Sunday last week, Jimmy Johnson said, “I don’t know if Quincy Carter is Paul Hackett’s type of quarterback. I don’t know really who is.”
The whole Fox crew broke out into huge, mischievous grins, with Terry Bradshaw saying, “Write that down.” So we did.
Johnson, like ESPN’s Mike Ditka, doesn’t have the restraints that a desire to return to coaching puts on an analyst. Both have proclaimed they don’t want to return. Both seem sincere.
Unencumbered by an ache to coach again, Ditka seems committed to broadcasting. It is impressive that ESPN convinced a guy of Ditka’s profile to work shows during the week, with cameos on ESPN’s main event, NFL Countdown.
Ditka gives you some solid information, but he rarely makes your ears perk, like Johnson did last Sunday. In the end, Johnson can put a Matchup title next to his Super Bowls and national championship.
