BOLLINGER PROVIDES BACKUP POWER

JET NOTES

TEMPE – Brooks Bollinger yesterday showed what he displayed while making plays in college at Wisconsin – he showed some moxie when he was forced into action after Quincy Carter was injured on the third play of the game from scrimmage.

Carter, starting his third game in place of injured starter Chad Pennington, was taken down by three Cardinals’ defenders on a rollout to the right and suffered what was announced as a “head injury.”

That brought in Bollinger, the third QB on the roster after Pennington and Carter. While it might have appeared bleak, Bollinger held his poise well and performed admirably until Carter returned midway through the second quarter.

Bollinger, making his first-ever NFL regular-season appearance, completed 5 of 9 passes for 60 yards with a 76.2 passer rating and one sack.

Credit Jets’ RT Kareem McKenzie with one of the best unheralded plays of the game when he made a heads-up recovery of a Carter fumble on third down in Arizona territory late in the third quarter.

On the next play, Jets’ Doug Brien kicked a 46-yard field goal to give the Jets a 6-3 lead.

Jets’ second-year FB B.J. Askew made his first career reception when he caught an 11-yard screen pass from Carter.

Penalties hurt the Jets in the first half, particularly a roughing the passer foul on LB Eric Barton late in the first half that added big yardage to a game-tying Arizona drive.

DE Shaun Ellis, who had an offside penalty to give Arizona a first down that scoring drive, later was called for a roughing the passer penalty.

That gives the Jets four roughing the passer penalties called on them in the last two games, including the second on Ellis, who was fined for a helmet-to-helmet hit in last week’s game.

LB Mark Brown made his first NFL start for the Jets replacing the injured Victor Hobson (ankle). S Jon McGraw (abdominal strain) missed another game.

LB Jason Glenn, though he was taken off the injury report with his broken arm better, was left on the inactive list. WR Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) sat out the game.

Jets’ RG Pete Kendall and CB David Barrett played against their former team here yesterday while former Jet LB James Darling played against the Jets for the first time since leaving New York two years ago.
