New York City Transit yesterday began distributing pamphlets to its riders that give tips on how to evacuate the subway system during emergencies.
The brochures were offered at five subway stations yesterday. About a half-million pamphlets have been printed, and all the city’s 468 subway stations will carry them by next week.
“Evacuations are the option of last resort in an emergency situation,” NYC Transit President Lawrence Reuter said, stressing “how important it is to listen to the instructions of the crew and not self-evacuate.”
Besides offering evacuation instructions, the pamphlets say when to pull the emergency brake cord. They also outline what to do during a fire or medical emergency.
