Bitter lesson / Editorial: P. 34 A day after staging a massive demonstration to protest the installation of metal detectors, students at DeWitt Clinton HS in The Bronx said a new scanning procedure did little to alleviate long lines and frustration.
“It still took a long time [to get into the building],” said Anthony Stafford, 17, who organized the rally with friends through the Internet and petitions. “It was shorter than yesterday but longer than it should be.”
Responding to student gripes, the Department of Education used scanners at three entrances yesterday instead of one.
DOE spokesman Keith Kalb disputed several students’ claims to The Post that they were still late because of lines.
“There was no backup at any entrance,” he said.
Students, meanwhile, also complained about an accompanying policy that requires them to stay inside the entire day – and eat lunch in an overcrowded cafeteria.
It’s so crowded “if you raise your hands you might smack someone,” said senior Jeffrey Ousley, 18.
